Description: The BDS@home (Bolton dementia support at home) is central to our success, in providing people living with dementia a nurturing one to one support through the delivery of a personalised, interactive, therapeutic activities that will sustain, as far as is possible, people’s independence, existing lifestyle and relationships. As a volunteer you will deliver a one-to-one session per week over a period of 8 weeks. The aim is that the activities will engage the person living with dementia (PLWD), encouraging them to deliver new skills and /or expand on their interests, leading to more confidence and independence as they continue with activities once the sessions of activities have ended. Key Roles & Responsibilities 1. To create a stimulating and varied variety of therapeutic activities. Working with the PLWD to understand their like/dislikes and abilities and needs. 2. To lead and encourage PLWD to join in meaningful activities whilst maintaining their independence, choice and dignity, to enable them to lead as full and active life as possible. 3. Liaise with staff and the BDS at home support worker and pass on any relevant information regarding the PLWD. 4. Observe the individual circumstances of people living with dementia: sensing and understanding their feelings and emotions, to identify the best interventions, they need to promote their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Essential Experience • Understand the impact of dementia on people's lives and fully subscribe to the Charity's aim of "Living well with Dementia". • Ability to work on own initiative. • Experience of working in a caring environment and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. • Be willing to travel in and around the Bolton area Working Relationships • To develop and maintain effective relationships with people living with dementia and their families and carers. • Communicate effectively with staff from Bolton Dementia Support Person Specification 1. Able to assess and evaluate client needs. 2. Good organisational and time managements skills. 3. Ability to understand the sensory, cognitive, and physical problems of a person who has been diagnosed with dementia. 4. Awareness of the need to maintain personal and professional boundaries and client confidentiality. 5. Commitment to and understanding of equal opportunities. 6. Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are being followed to make sure that both carers and the cared for are healthy, safe, and well.
