As a voluntary organisation the governance of the MBBCS is the responsibility of an elected Council. The MBBCS is also registered charity (1048407) and complies with the requirements of the Charity Commission. The aim of the MBBCS is to restore, reconstruct, preserve, maintain and improve the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal which commences at Middlewood Locks in Salford and runs northwards to Nob End in Little Lever from where the canal divides into branches to Bolton and Bury, a total length of just over 15 miles. The MBBCS does not own any part of the canal but works with the owners of the canal including the Canal & River Trust and with other interested organisations to achieve its aim. Parts of the canal are in water and used for recreation, mainly fishing. Other parts of the canal bed are wildlife habitats. The MBBCS is keen that any restoration that takes place achieves biodiversity net gain and benefits the wellbeing of all users of the canal. The MBBCS has a range of activities including work on the infrastructure of the canal, regular meetings on various aspects of canal and related history and engagement with local communities to promote the canal as a resource for learning and for green and blue exercise.
